French provincial | Beauty and elegance meets rustic country

June 30, 2020

French provincial homes are modelled after the 17th and 18th century two-storey manors in the rolling country hills of France. They’re inspired by the elaborate décor found in the stately and formal homes of the French aristocrats.

Over the years, to give the country homes of the upper-classes a less formal feel, the traditional styles were softened, making the lines less rigid and the overall feel of the home more rustic and farm-like. The result? A country house that was relaxed and inviting, while retaining many of the delicate features of the French influence.

Cool neutral tones

French provincial interiors tend away from clean minimalist lines and towards more ornate finishes. Sticking to neutral tones – white, grey, beige and mushroom – keep the style from being too cluttered and overbearing. Add some gold accents for added opulence.

Rustic wood

Inject warmth into those cool, neutral tones with natural wood. Parquetry flooring is a classic hallmark of French provincial design, and adds a distinctly European touch to any home, as do exposed beams, antique furniture and rustic farm tables.

Antique (looking) furniture

It goes without saying that antique furniture, particularly from the 17th and 18th century, is a natural fit with this style of home. That said, these fancy pieces come with a fancy pricetag, so look out for modern furniture that features French farmhouse touches, such as cabriole legs, hallway consoles with wrought iron detailing and panelled armoires.

Texture

Layers, layers and more layers is key to hitting that inviting-yet-elegant style. Neutral linens, rough-hewn wood, touchable throws, sumptuous pillows, tufted upholstery and distressed furniture, in neutral tones with cool, dark accents of navy, charcoal or black, is the classic French provincial aesthetic.
